For years now, we’ve been hearing that the best way to pack for a cruise is to follow that same tired checklist: roll your clothes, pack one outfit per day, bring a formal night look, and don’t forget your lanyard.

I just saw another influencer post the same advice, wrapped up with a cute little bow and a packing cube. And since everyone seems to be saying it, it must be true, right?

Uhh... no ma’am.

I think most of that advice comes from a good place, but let’s be real—it’s outdated, it’s basic, and it’s not built for us. What works for a weekend road trip or a family beach vacay does NOT always work when you’re hopping on a cruise ship in the middle of July with plans to slay poolside, hit up every port, and still look photo-ready.

Back when I started cruising heavy, I followed all those "packing rules," and baby, let me tell you... I ended up sweating through polyester, missing key essentials, and hauling half my closet for no reason. I felt frustrated, overpacked and underprepared—a hot mess with a heavy suitcase. Not to mention, the fussing it caused between Terry and I over heavy bags!

I didn’t feel like myself either. I wasn’t packing for me... I was packing like someone I saw on Pinterest. And listen, your cruise style should reflect YOU. People choose to travel with you, eat with you, and vibe with you because you bring your own magic onboard. Don’t dull that down with cookie-cutter packing tips.

What’s Not So Great About Traditional Cruise Packing Advice

Let’s break it down. Most traditional cruise packing lists don’t hit because:

  • You’ll waste time and energy packing things you won’t wear.

  • It doesn’t factor in your real lifestyle or vibe onboard.

  • You might look cute in photos, but feel hella uncomfortable.

  • Cruise lines have evolved—no one’s policing your dinner look like it’s 2005.

  • It assumes you’re traveling like a minimalist. (And we know you’re not.)

So what can you do to pack smarter AND slay your vacay? Glad you asked.

A Better Way to Pack Like a Pro for Peak Summer Cruising

Here’s what I did that actually worked for me after ditching the old-school packing rules:

Step #1: Pack by Vibes, Not Days

Instead of one outfit per day, I pack by vibe.

My categories:

  • Chill Fit (breakfast, lounging, onboard activities)

  • Excursion Fit (comfortable, cute, and functional)

  • Evening Slay (dinner and shows, a lil razzle dazzle)

  • Swim + Cover-Up (because you’re gonna be at the pool or beach daily)

Why this works: It helps you remix outfits and pack smarter. A black romper? Could be chill and evening slay depending on accessories. A button-up shirt? Layer it poolside or wear it open for dinner.

Step #2: Choose Fabrics That Work in Heat + Humidity

Chile, if I see one more person packing a satin gown or blouse for a Caribbean cruise... STOP. Summer cruises get hot and sticky. You want:

  • Lightweight cottons

  • Breathable linen

  • Stretchy jersey knits

  • Moisture-wicking activewear for excursions

Also, skip bulky denim unless it’s shorts. That thick stuff traps heat and holds smells. And always test your white fits before you pack—cruise sweat + see-through fabric = no bueno.

Step #3: Use Packing Cubes for Function, Not Just Aesthetic

Yes, they look cute in your suitcase, but packing cubes ain’t just for show. I organize mine by category (Chill, Excursion, Swim, Evening), so I’m not tearing through my whole bag to find that one sundress.

Bonus tip: Keep a separate "Port Day Cube" in your beach bag with:

That way, when it’s time to head out for the day, you just grab and go.

Step #4: Don’t Forget the Power Accessories

If you’re tryna give "luxury cruiser energy," don’t play yourself with just flip-flops and a sunhat. Pack:

  • Statement earrings (lightweight, big impact)

  • Sunglasses that fit your face shape

  • A waist belt or chain to switch up your evening looks

  • A packable hat that folds but still bounces back

  • Neutral sandals that go with everything

Accessories are what pull a whole look together—and they take up way less space than full outfits.

Step #5: Pack a Mini Emergency Kit (a.k.a. Cruise Survival Kit)

Trust me, you don’t wanna be buying overpriced deodorant or ibuprofen from the gift shop. Make your own kit with:

Step #6: Laundry Hack = Mid-Cruise Refresh

laundry

On a 7+ night cruise? Bring a little bag of travel detergent sheets or pods. Even if your ship doesn’t have self-service laundry, you can hand wash swimsuits and underwear in the sink. Hang to dry overnight using the clothesline in the shower (most cruise lines have this in the bathroom), a travel clothesline or over-the-door hook.

You’ll feel fresher, save space, and have more outfit flexibility.

Next Steps Let’s recap.

The old-school "pack one outfit per day and hope for the best" method? Nah. We’re packing by vibe, focusing on fabrics, and accessorizing like a whole style icon. We’re organizing packing cubes, staying cool and comfy, and making sure we don’t forget the little lifesavers that keep us cruisin' easy.

The truth is, what works for someone else might not work for you. But you can absolutely pack like a pro and feel like your best self the whole trip. All it takes is a better game plan, a little trial and error, and permission to do YOU.
