Altos de Chavón

#1. Altos de Chavón

The Village That Time Forgot

Listen. If you’re looking for romance, beauty, and a photo op that screams “soft life,” Altos de Chavón is it. This re-created 16th-century Mediterranean village is perched above the Chavón River and it is giving Europe-meets-the-Caribbean. Think cobblestone streets, art galleries, little boutiques, and one of the prettiest amphitheaters you ever did see.

It’s also home to a design school affiliated with Parsons in NYC. So you already know—creativity is in the air here.

Pro Tip: Swing by for lunch and grab a table with a view of the river. Thank me later.

Yachting on the Chavón River

#2. Go Yachting on the Chavón River

If you love a luxury moment (and I know you do), rent a private yacht or catamaran to cruise the Chavón River. This ain’t your average boat ride. We’re talkin’ cinematic views, palm trees for days, and a smooth soundtrack of island breezes.

Fun fact? This river has been a backdrop for movies like Apocalypse Now and Jurassic Park. Yup—your yacht might float past Hollywood history.

Bonus: You can also do dinner cruises in the evening with champagne and candlelight. Issa vibe.

Casa de Campo Resort

#3. Casa de Campo Resort

Even If You’re Just Visiting

Even if you’re not staying at this world-famous resort, you can still roll up like a VIP. Book a spa day, reserve a golf tee time at the legendary “Teeth of the Dog” course, or snag a reservation at one of the luxe restaurants on property.

This place is where celebs come to disappear (Beyoncé’s been here, okay?). It’s all gated, bougie, and beachy in the best way possible.

And the marina? Whew. You’ll feel like you’re in Monaco.

#4. Eat at El Mesón

La Romana’s OG Restaurant

If you want Dominican flavors made with love and a little flair, you gotta eat at El Mesón. This spot has been serving up the real deal since way back, and locals still flock to it. Expect mofongo, grilled seafood, and rice dishes that feel like a warm hug.

Their sangria? We’ve been told that it’s got a lil’ kick to it. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Isla Catalina

#5. Snorkel or Dive at Catalina Island

(Isla Catalina)

Hop on a boat and take the short ride out to Isla Catalina—white sands, clear turquoise water, and some of the best snorkeling you’ll find in the DR.

There’s even a section called “The Wall” that drops down dramatically underwater. Divers love it, but it’s beginner-friendly too.

You can book this as a shore excursion or hire a local guide for a private beach day. Either way, you’ll come back salty, sunkissed, and satisfied.

Mamajuana

#6. Sip Mamajuana the Right Way

You haven’t really been to La Romana till you’ve tried mamajuana. It’s that earthy, spicy, slightly sweet Dominican drink that’s basically the island’s version of moonshine—but smoother. It’s made by soaking rum, red wine, and honey in a bottle filled with tree bark and herbs.

Some folks call it “Dominican Viagra.” 👀 I’ll just say this—sip slow.

Where to try it: Grab a glass at a local beach bar or visit a rum tasting room at the Casa de Campo Marina.

Bayahibe Beach

#7. Day Trip to Bayahibe Beach

Want that soft white sand and baby blue water without the touristy crowds? Slide down to Bayahibe Beach, just 25 minutes outside La Romana. It’s a small fishing village that’s lowkey and lovely, and the seafood? Next level.

If your schedule allows, catch a sunset here with a fresh piña colada in hand and your toes in the sand. It's giving peace. It’s giving “I deserve this.”
