Holland America Line Planning

Holland America, at your pace.

Holland America Line pairs destination-led itineraries with mid-sized ships, attentive service, strong dining, and a calmer onboard rhythm. The right match depends on the route, exact ship, cabin, travel party, and whether Cruise-Only or Have It All fits the way you will spend.

Start with the whole trip

Choose the route first, then make sure the ship supports the trip.

Holland America is known for destination depth and a more relaxed ship experience, but the fleet is not one-size-fits-all. Ship class, sailing length, sea-day balance, cabin location, dining, and package choice can turn two quotes with the same logo into very different vacations.

The strength

Destination-rich routes, mid-sized ships, fresh dining, live music, and comfortable places to slow down.

The variable

Pinnacle, Signature, Vista, or R Class; cabin location; sea days; sailing length; and the travelers in your group.

The comparison

Cruise-Only versus Have It All as shown in the live quote, beside crew appreciation and the extras you will actually use.

Holland America may fit you if…

  • The itinerary, scenic cruising, and time ashore are central to the trip.
  • You prefer live music, good dining, enrichment, and a relaxed rhythm to nonstop high-energy attractions.
  • You like a mid-sized ship with comfortable lounges and plenty of room to watch the water.
  • You are traveling as a couple, solo, with friends, or with a group that shares a similar pace.
  • You want to compare Cruise-Only with Have It All based on what you will actually use.

Think twice if…

  • Your top priority is water parks, thrill rides, or a long list of active ship attractions.
  • You want late-night nightlife or pool-deck energy to drive the entire vacation.
  • You assume Have It All includes every drink, every excursion, unlimited specialty dining, and standard Crew Appreciation.
  • You are choosing only by headline fare without checking the package, ship class, and cabin.
  • Your group wants very different onboard rhythms and nobody is willing to compromise.
Those tradeoffs do not make Holland America wrong. They make the exact itinerary, ship, cabin, and package worth comparing before you book.

The real cost

The standard fare covers the foundation—not every choice you may make.

Holland America says its advertised fares include taxes and fees, while the cruise foundation generally includes your stateroom, dining in included venues, entertainment, and many onboard activities. Specialty dining, drinks, Wi-Fi, shore excursions, spa services, casino play, and other purchases commonly cost extra. Have It All can bundle a beverage package, Surf Wi-Fi, specialty-dining nights, and shore-excursion credit, subject to the exact sailing and current terms. Standard Crew Appreciation is separate unless the booked offer or invoice specifically includes it.

Generally included

  • Your stateroom and ocean transportation on the booked sailing.
  • Main Dining Room meals, Lido Market, and other included food venues available on the ship.
  • Entertainment, live music, enrichment, and many onboard activities.
  • Access to pools, the fitness center, and shared public spaces, subject to the exact ship.
  • Selected basic non-alcoholic beverages in included venues.
  • Included in-room dining selections; some menu items carry an additional charge.

Commonly extra

  • Crew Appreciation unless the exact booked offer or invoice says otherwise.
  • Specialty dining and for-purchase menu items outside the booked fare or package.
  • Alcohol, specialty coffee, bottled water, soda, and beverages beyond the booked package limits.
  • Wi-Fi on Cruise-Only fares or upgrades beyond the included Have It All Surf level.
  • Shore excursions, spa and salon services, casino, photos, retail, and laundry.
  • Transfers, pre- or post-cruise hotels, travel protection, medical care, and personal purchases.
This is an evergreen starting point, not a substitute for the current quote. Have It All benefits, prices, limits, and eligibility can depend on sailing length, departure date, promotion, guest number, and purchase timing. Early Booking Bonus terms can differ from the standard package. The live quote, invoice, and current terms control.

Our Holland America rule

Let the itinerary lead—then price the package honestly.

Holland America can be an excellent match when the ports, scenic cruising, ship size, and onboard pace line up. We compare the exact route, ship class, cabin, sea days, and likely onboard spend before recommending the sailing.

Have It All is useful when its benefits replace spending you would make anyway. It cannot turn the wrong route, ship, or cabin into the right trip.

Look one level deeper

Four choices shape the Holland America trip before the first day onboard.

01

Itinerary and scenic cruising

Compare ports, time ashore, Glacier Bay or other scenic days where applicable, departure point, sailing length, and total travel time.

02

Ship class and onboard pace

Compare ship size, layout, dining venues, music, enrichment, pools, observation spaces, and the places you will spend sea days.

03

Cabin and location

Check category, space, motion, noise, elevator access, walking distance, mobility needs, and the view you want on scenic days.

04

Fare and likely extras

Price Cruise-Only against Have It All, then add Crew Appreciation, upgrades, excursions, spa time, transportation, and other likely spend.

Answer these three questions before you compare Holland America sailings.

01

Is this trip primarily about the ports, scenic cruising, the ship, or an equal balance?

02

Will Have It All replace drinks, Wi-Fi, dining, and excursion spending you would make anyway?

03

Does the exact ship and cabin support your preferred pace, mobility, and time at sea?

The right answer can change for the same travelers on a port-heavy itinerary and a sailing with more sea-day time.

Onboard experiences shape the value, too. Compare what is included, what costs extra, and what you will genuinely enjoy.

Compare the vacation, not only the fare

Put Have It All and your likely extras beside the Cruise-Only fare.

The Cruise True Cost Kit helps you compare beverages, Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore-excursion credit, Crew Appreciation, upgrades, and travel-side costs against the vacation you would actually buy.

Supplier inclusions, ships, venues, promotions, package costs, benefits, prices, and policies change. Verify the exact quote and current terms before booking.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What does a Holland America Cruise-Only fare generally include?

The cruise foundation generally includes your stateroom, ocean transportation, dining in included venues, entertainment, live music, and many onboard activities. Holland America also says its advertised fares include taxes and fees. Exact venues, activities, and access vary by ship and sailing, so the live quote and ship details control.

What does Have It All add?

The standard Have It All package currently bundles a Signature Beverage Package, Surf Wi-Fi, specialty-dining nights, and shore-excursion credit. Dining nights and excursion credit scale with sailing length, and limits and eligibility apply. Early Booking Bonus can add or upgrade benefits, so compare the exact offer rather than relying on an older list.

Does Have It All include Crew Appreciation?

Standard Have It All does not currently include the daily Crew Appreciation charge. A qualifying Have It All Early Booking Bonus may include prepaid Crew Appreciation. Check the named fare, live invoice, and current terms because the two offers are not interchangeable.

Is Holland America Line all-inclusive?

No. Cruise-Only leaves many common extras outside the fare, and Have It All still has limits. Crew Appreciation, excursions beyond the credit, beverage upgrades, spa services, casino spending, retail, transportation, travel protection, medical care, and other purchases may remain extra.

Do I need to compare the exact Holland America ship?

Yes. Pinnacle, Signature, Vista, and R Class ships differ in size, layout, cabins, dining, entertainment, pools, and atmosphere. Compare the exact ship and sailing rather than carrying Rotterdam’s features into every Holland America quote.

Is Holland America only for older adults?

No. Couples, solo travelers, friends, and multigenerational groups can find a fit. The better question is whether the exact ship, itinerary, entertainment, family needs, and generally calmer pace match the people traveling.

Why is Holland America often considered for Alaska?

Holland America offers Alaska routes with glacier and scenic-cruising days, including Glacier Bay on selected itineraries, plus cruisetour options that can add time on land. The exact route matters: compare glacier access, ports, docking times, ship, and land portion rather than choosing only by the Alaska label.

What does personal cruise planning cost?

The approved planning fee is $25 per traveler for an individual booking. The planning page explains the service and next steps before you submit a request.
